Nutrition Seminar Feb 21st Waterford

Peter Francis, Senior lecturer in sport and health, discusses the interaction between nutrition and exercise and how both can be manipulated to optimise body composition (bone, muscle, fat) for health and performance.
● What are bone, muscle and fat at a basic level?
● What is a calorie? Are all calories the same?
● Adaptation to exercise, how does it work?
● Does the type and timing of exercise make a difference?
● What are carbohydrates, proteins and fats? How much do we need?
● Pulling it all together, how do we modify exercise and nutrition to optimize adaptation?

Honore Hoedt Coaching Presentation

Athletics Ireland have organised a coaching presentation with Dutchman Honore Hoedt, who is a world renowned middle distance coach and is one of Europe’s leading authorities on middle distance running. He has a vast amount of knowledge working with athletes across all events, but it is his specialisation working with 400m/800m profile athletes that is of huge interest and one that could add value to coaches working in this specific area in Ireland.

Date: Tuesday, 17th February
Time: 7:00pm
Venue: Athlone Institute of Technology (room to be confirmed)
This presentation is open to all coaches, athletes and those that would like to attend.

AIT International Arena Grand Prix

AIT International Arena Grand Prix

AIT International Arena
Wednesday 18th February 2015
Doors open at 6.30pm

Tickets for the AIT International Arena Grand Prix can be purchased online at www.aitsport.ie, priced at €20, €10 and €15 for groups of 10 or more, excluding handling charge.

Three-time Olympic medalist and former World Champion Carmelita Jeter will compete in the AIT International Arena Grand Prix on 18 February. The American sprinter will run in the 60m event.

Jeter, the second-fastest woman of all time, joins Asafa Powell and Mutaz Barshim in what is building up to be a star-studded evening in the midlands venue. Currently Jeter holds three of the top ten fastest times ever run.

A silver medalist over 60m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2010, Jeter’s PB at that distance is 7.02 secs. The 34-year-old was 100m World Champion in 2011, winning silver over 200m the following year. At the London Olympics she garnered bronze in the 200m, as well as gold in the record-breaking 4x100m relay.

The participants for the hugely anticipated Deloitte Mile were also announced today. Vying to be the first man to run sub-four minutes indoor in Ireland are Ciaran O’Lionaird, Eoin Everard, John Travers, John Coghlan, Conor Bradley, Danny Mooney, Joe Warne, Ben Blankenship and James O’Hare.

O’Lionaird ran the mile in 3:52.10 at the Armory Track, New York in February 2013 and will surely be looking to repeat that form in Athlone. The Leevale AC athlete endured heartbreak at the European Championships last summer, when he was taken out in the 1500m final. The previous year, he came third in the 3000m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

University athlete of the year John Travers will be hoping that the return to his alma mater will be a successful one. The sport management graduate ran the fastest ever debutant sub-four minute mile on Irish soil when he clocked 3:55 for the distance.

AIT president, Prof Ciarán Ó Catháin, said: “We have a really super field of athletes lined up for the grand prix next month, and we’ll be making further announcements in the coming days. There is a great sense of excitement about the event, which we’re confident will be a sellout.”

Munster Senior & Masters Indoor Championships 2015

The Munster Senior & Masters Indoor Championships were held on Sunday 18th January in Nenagh Indoor Stadium.
See Consolidated Results here.

Our club picked up 6 medals in this years Munster Indoors.

Maria McCarthy competed in the 3000m & 1500m senior events. Maria competed in the 3000m first and ran a very good race to take the Gold medal in a time of 10:29.70.  She was in action again in the afternoon with the 1500m race. Their was only five competing but it was very competitive with all five ladies racing for podium. Maria ran very well considering the 3000m race in her legs and crossed the line in 3rd place taking the Bronze medal in a time of 4:42.61, just 0.3 of a second behind 2nd place Carol Finn of Leevale AC.

In the Masters Category, Jerome Foley was representing our club for the first time in a championship competition. Jerome who is no stranger to the short distance, although it has been a few years since he competed at Munster level, raced in the O50 800m race. With seven men racing in his category it was sure to be a good test of strength and speed. Jerome ran a very good tactical race and crossed the line in 1st place taking Gold in a time of 2:28.10. Well done Jerome, I am sure we will see you on the podium again.

Our most reliable athlete, Jim O'Shea was back in action in his O70 category. In the 60m sprint Jim came in 2nd place with a time of 9.75sec. Still a sub 10sec for 60m is very impressive.
Jim also competed in the High Jump and won Gold here with a jump of 1.30m. In his long Jump Jim picked up another Gold with a jump of 3.91m

From Killarney one option would be to take the N72 for Mallow, then continue on the N72 for Dungarvan.
From Dungarvan, take the N25 signed-posted Waterford / Rosslare. Get off the N25 dual carriageway (new road) at the exit just before the Toll Bridge (signposted Waterford South/R710). At the top of the ramp, take the right through a small roundabout, proceed over the flyover, go straight through another small roundabout (signposted R710), then straight through two larger roundabouts (signposted R710/City Centre/Tramore).
Another alternative would be to head for Cork, Youghall, Dungarvan.. Time wise its the same but distance is about 20KM longer
