Club Notes July 11th 2021

 European Silver for David Kenny

David Kenny secured Ireland’s first ever Race Walk medal at the European U23 Championships in Tallinn, Estonia on Friday July 9th.

David was ultra-impressive as he secured the second-place finish in the Men’s 20km Walk, finishing in a time of 1.25.50 behind eventual winner José Manuel Perez of Spain in 1:25:06. The course was a 1Km loop which made it a very demanding race both physically and mentally having to to negate a narrow turnaround twenty times over the course of the race. David sat comfortably on the shoulder of the leader in second place at the 10k mark and maintained his position to claim the historic silver medal for Ireland.

This superb silver is Ireland’s 9th medal at these championships since it was started in 1997.

David has been in flying form this season, winning the national Race Walk c'ship only a few weeks ago and will now quickly turn his attention to competing at his first Olympic Games in Tokyo, having just been confirmed during the week.

Everyone in the club and all athletic clubs in Kerry are so delighted for David and his family. We all wish him well as he prepares for the Olympics which commences in less than three weeks.
