May 2022



The Track and Field season stepped up pace this month.

The County Juvenile and Juniors were held in Castleisland ion 7th 8th May. The club was well represented in all ages across every discipline

In the distance races Fionn Hogan and Tomas Ryan both finished well up in a very large field in the U11 500m race. Fionn also came 5th in the Turbo Javelin and ran well in the sprint. Ryan Vickers won the U 13 600m. He showed his versatility following up with a win in the sprint and Shot Put competitions. His brother Isaac won the 800m in a new record and also added a medal in the u14 Shot Put. Ryan and Isaac teamed up with Conor McCarthy and Kevin O’Shea to win the relay. Kevin also won the discus, 2nd in the javelin and 3rd in the shot. Credit to Jerome Foley for all his training with the sprinters over the last few weeks. Mairead Walsh was unlucky to finish out of the medals in 4th place in the u 16 800m and 6th in the 200m. Laura Bradley competing in her first walking race was very unlucky not to bring home a medal.

Natasha Myers came 5th and 6th in the Junior 100 and 200m and came 2nd in the long jump with a PB of 4.53m.

Newcomer Jake Scannell came first in the U10 60m. Not to be out done his older brother Cillian also medalled in the sprint. Conor McCarthy grandson of the legendary Tom came 3rd in the U14 200m.

Rachel Boyle came 2nd in the U 14 80m and Roisin Daly 1st in the 100m u 15. Charlie Perkins came 2nd and 3rd in the U 16 100 and 200 respectively. Daithi Fleming won his heat in the u9 60m but just missed out on a medal in the final. Tomas Ryan finished well up in a very large u9 long jump competition.

 In the throwing events Aine O’ Shea finished 3rd in the Shot put. Niamh O Shea finished 1st in Javelin and Shot and her sister Doireann won the Junior Javelin.

Fionn Daly made the top 8 in a very competitive u 11 Turbo Javelin. Patrick Kearney just came up short in the Junior Discus with an impressive 32.30.

He followed this up a few days later with a win in the South Munster schools in Cork. Orna O’Leary was very unlucky not to qualify in the intermediate girls discus.

On the 19th May the primary school sports were held in Listry after an absence of 2 years. The rain just about held off and there were large numbers from a variety of schools competing. It was great to see many athletes compete for the first time.

Tomas Clifford, Aine and Niamh O’Shea all medalled in the Munster Schools Athletics Championships in Templemore on the 21st May.

On the Parkrun front Liam and Matthew Smyth, Fionn Hogan, Brendan and Tomas Lynch, Michael O Connor and others all competed regularly in Tralee, Killarney and Newcastlewest.
