Aldi National Community Games Athletics
The Aldi Community Games was held over two days in University of Limerick. The atmosphere was overwhelming with many competitive and entertaining races to be seen. We had a eight athletes who made it through to represent Kerry. Each and everyone did very well over their individual events. Mairead Walsh had an outstanding U12 600m where she fought hard over the last 80m to come from fourth place to win silver. This is added to the silver team medal when she competed in the XC Relays back in May.
Ellen Kelliher advanced through all her heats in the U14 100m sprint to reach the Final. Here she got everything right to finish in fourth place.
Eabha McCarthy competing in the U14 80m Hurdles had a busy weekend where she too qualified for the Finals. Again under strong competition Eabha hurdled very well to finish fourth place.
Doireann O'Shea did very well in the U14 Javelin where she was placed in 6th position with some fine throwing.
Shauna McCarthy reached the final of the U16 1500m distance race. She gave it her all and finished in 6th place. This was Shauna's final race competing in the Community Games. She has bee involved since the age of eight and has competed at national level on 4 occasions, most recently winning the 7K Marathon back in May. Well done.
Liath Lenihan was unfortunate to compete in the U16 High Jump due to injury. Like Shauna, Liath represented Kerry in many occasions over the years. We all wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back doing what she loves best.
Others who competed on the day were Katie Doe in the Long Puck and Simon O'Leary in the U14 Shot Putt.
A special recognition must go to Maria McCarthy who was coaching four of these athletes over the last few months.
