Club Notes Week Ending 21st Oct. 2018

Munster Novice & Juvenile Even ages Cross Country Championships.
Beaufort was the setting for the Munster Novice & Juvenile Even ages Cross Country Championships. Held on Sunday 21st Oct which started with a wet morning and cleared to glorious sunshine as the races commenced. There was a great turnout for all Munster athletic clubs and some very exciting races to keep the spectators well entertained.
The first race was the U10 Girls 1000m. Jessie Lynch ran very well from the gun and finished in third place overall and was part of the County Team bronze medal winners
Isaac Vickers equally ran very well to be placed seventh to win individual medal and was part of the County Team bronze medal winners. His brother Ryan, out of age, had a great run.
In the U12 Girls 2000m Mairead Walsh & Rhian McCarthy were competing and part of county team. They both did exceptionally with Rhian finishing in 48th place & Mairead in 50th place.
Tyrnan Lynch did yet again another strong run to finish in 27th place.
Eabha McCarthy was in the U14 3000m where she was seventh overall.
Shauna McCarthy & Natasha Myers represented our club in the U16 4000m. Shauna who is no stranger to the Munster XC with many championship medals under her belt had a great race. Running out of age she was part of the lead group from the start. At the half way point she was placed in sixth overall and comfortable. In the final lap she pushed up to 4th place and had to put in a sprint finish to hold onto her position. A great performance and she now represents Munster at the Nationals next month. Natasha, who is coming back after a long spell out of running did well to complete a long distance at munster level. Shauna was also part of the county team to bronze.
Cian Spillane competed in the U16 boys. This was a very competitive and fast race from the start. Cian also running out of age found the pace tough and finished in good 27th place.

The Novice Women's 4000m was the highlight of the day. Marie McKenna & Mary Daly were competing. Mary Daly was with the lead group from the start. After the first 1000m lap Mary took the lead and over the next two laps she opened up a gap of over forty meters from the second placed runner. Mary was never going to be caught and finished in a well deserved first place taking the Munster Novice title. Marie Mckenna also did very well finishing in 15th place where both were part of the county team to win bronze.
George McCarthy was our only Novice Men's 6000m club representative which was the final race of the day. There was a good representative from Kerry clubs, eleven in total. The start was very fast with the top athletes fighting to keep with the lead group. George paced himself very well and over the course of the race he continued to fight his way through the field. George finished in fourteenth place overall and was fourth home for the county picking up county silver medal. Well done to Eddie O'Connor of Listowel AC who was third overall. Again, a HUGE thank-you to the very dedicated volunteer coaches spending their fourth Sunday in a row at XC championships.

Autumn Open Cross Country
Caitriona Barry was in Dublin competing in the Autumn Open Cross Country fixture, which incorporates the qualification for the British & Irish Masters championship. Club Notes Week Ending 14th Oct. 2018

County Senior, Junior & Juvenile Relays Cross Country
The final race in the County Cross Country fixtures was hosted by our own club on Sunday 14th October. Held on the farm land of McMahon's and organised by the Walsh's in Firies. It was like a summers day with glorious sunshine & no wind. The field was soft underfoot with some soft patches following Saturday's torrential rain. We would like to express our gratitude to the McMahon & Walsh families for the use of their land and facilities. Special thanks to all our volunteers in parking assistance and stewarding. Thanks to all who provided food & refreshments for competitors and spectators. It went down a treat and made just under €300 for the club funds.

The first race up was the women's Senior & Junior race. It was great to see Deirdre Nagle wearing the club singlet on her first race of the season. Deirdre did well to finish in fourth place overall. Pierrette Scroope, which is her very first season competing in cross country also did extremely well to complete the 5K distance and finish in tenth place. Not enough for a team but their personal achievements is more valuable.
In the senior men's 10Km, which was made up of eight laps, we had four athletes competing. Their was a very big field of competitors compared to other years which was great to see. The overall winner was Conor O'Mahony (An Riocht AC).
Arthur Fitzgerald ran well to be first club member to cross the line in ninth place. Not far behind was George McCarthy in 12th place. The team took bronze by the combined efforts of Brendan Lynch & Aidan McCarthy. Well done.
The juveniles were competing in the relays. Each team member had to run 500m. Again a great turnout from all clubs with on average 8 teams per age category.
Our U10 Girls were 5th,
U10 Boys 3rd,
U12 Girls 2nd,
U12 Boys 6th,
U14 Girls 3rd,
U16 Girls 3rd & U16 Boys 1st.
The best overall juvenile club went to Kenmare AC with Farranfore in second place. This was a great achievement for our small club. All our juveniles should be very proud. A special thanks to their lead coach, Maria McCarthy who puts alot of time into developing their running technique and preparing them for the cross country season.

Club Weekly Notes Week end 7th Oct. 2018

County Intermediate, Masters & Juvenile Uneven Age XC
Another very successful County Cross Country Championship,Hosted by Iveragh A.C., held in Caherciveen on a dry but blustery Sunday.
First Race was Womens Intermediate, Masters & U19's 4000m. Athletes had over 4 laps of a challenging course with sharp up hill and downhill to contend with. Maria McKenna had a battle on her hands competing for the Intermediate title. It was tit for tat right against An Riocht athlete for podium, unfortunately Maria had to settle for silver, it was an exciting race to watch. Maria also took silver Intermediate team medal with teammates Grace Crowley & Julie Deane.
Mary Daly, who took the intermediate title last year, equally had an exciting Masters race where she finished second overall and won her age category. Maria McKenna took silver in masters O40, where Caitriona Barry ran extremely well to take gold in her age category and third overall. Their combined efforts earned them gold in the Masters +35 team.
In the Mens Masters 7000m race we had two athletes competing. George McCarthy ran a very solid race where he comfortably won the O45 category and finishing 4th overall. Aidan McCarthy continues to improve with every race where he was placed 8th overall and 5th in his age category.

Our juveniles did very well today, those chocolate brownies baked by the McCarthy sisters are doing the trick!!.
In the U9 750m Leah McCarthy was 4th in Girls and Ryan Vickers was third in Boys race.
It was one-two in the U11 1500m Girls race. Jessie Lynch took gold and Rhian McCarthy won silver.
Our U11 Boys did very well, Tiarnan Lynch 2nd, Isaac Vickers 5th, John Sexton 7th. With the combined efforts of team mates, Kevin O'Shea, Rory O'Connor, Jack Teahan & Conor Foley they won gold in the team event.
We had six girls competing in the U13 2500m race. They did very well over a tough course, Eabha McCarthy was our only individual medal winner in this race finishing in 6th place, not far behind was Doireann O'Shea, Tessa McGuigan who was competing in her first year of xc, Sadhbh Teahan, Niamh O'Shea & Clodagh O'Connor. They finished fourth team overall just missing out by two points. Diarmuid Kirwan was our only U13 Boy who finished very strong.
Shauna McCarthy had a comfortable win in the U15 3500m Girls race. Cian Spillane first and Malachy Kirwan second, who ran a great race to finish strong. A credit to you all as you can see that your hard training is paying dividends.
