Club Notes Week Ending 14th Oct. 2018

County Senior, Junior & Juvenile Relays Cross Country
The final race in the County Cross Country fixtures was hosted by our own club on Sunday 14th October. Held on the farm land of McMahon's and organised by the Walsh's in Firies. It was like a summers day with glorious sunshine & no wind. The field was soft underfoot with some soft patches following Saturday's torrential rain. We would like to express our gratitude to the McMahon & Walsh families for the use of their land and facilities. Special thanks to all our volunteers in parking assistance and stewarding. Thanks to all who provided food & refreshments for competitors and spectators. It went down a treat and made just under €300 for the club funds.

The first race up was the women's Senior & Junior race. It was great to see Deirdre Nagle wearing the club singlet on her first race of the season. Deirdre did well to finish in fourth place overall. Pierrette Scroope, which is her very first season competing in cross country also did extremely well to complete the 5K distance and finish in tenth place. Not enough for a team but their personal achievements is more valuable.
In the senior men's 10Km, which was made up of eight laps, we had four athletes competing. Their was a very big field of competitors compared to other years which was great to see. The overall winner was Conor O'Mahony (An Riocht AC).
Arthur Fitzgerald ran well to be first club member to cross the line in ninth place. Not far behind was George McCarthy in 12th place. The team took bronze by the combined efforts of Brendan Lynch & Aidan McCarthy. Well done.
The juveniles were competing in the relays. Each team member had to run 500m. Again a great turnout from all clubs with on average 8 teams per age category.
Our U10 Girls were 5th,
U10 Boys 3rd,
U12 Girls 2nd,
U12 Boys 6th,
U14 Girls 3rd,
U16 Girls 3rd & U16 Boys 1st.
The best overall juvenile club went to Kenmare AC with Farranfore in second place. This was a great achievement for our small club. All our juveniles should be very proud. A special thanks to their lead coach, Maria McCarthy who puts alot of time into developing their running technique and preparing them for the cross country season.
