Club Weekly Notes weekend 25th Feb. 2018

On Saturday 24th February saw the Manx Harriers Open Race Walk Championships at Douglas, Isle of Man. This event held annually dates back to the late 1970’s and has seen many international and world class athletes testing themselves over the N.S.C. perimeter raceway which is known to be a fast circuit . In recent years it has proved very popular with the younger generation and has played host to the Nihill Shield (named after Paul Nihill, the first Manx Open event winner) which is a match between Ireland and England youth walkers where the best of the younger athletes have been selected to compete for their country.
Our club was represented by David Kenny. David who has been race walking for many years now continues to be a feature in many race walking championships nationally. David competed in the 10Km distance, where he had a superb race finishing in first place in a time of 46mins 26sec. This is a 3mins improvement from his previous best. A great achievement, very well done.

Biting cold and blustery conditions didn’t deter the competitors at an exciting Irish Life Health Munster Schools Cross Country Championships at the WIT Sportsgrounds in Carriganore on Friday 23rd Feb.
Cian Spillane (Milltown Pres.) competed in the Minor Boys 2500m race. Cian had plenty of competition throughout the distance where he was just pipped at the end to take fourth place.
Shauna McCarthy (Killorglin CC) competed in the Junior 2,500m Girls race. It was a very fast race from the gun with four girls opening up a big gap from the rest of the group. Shauna held on and pushed herself into 3rd place on the straight to the finish line. Well done to you both. They now go forward to the National Schools XC final on March 10th. We wish you both the best of luck.
