GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships 2015

The GloHealth Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships were held in the AIT International Arena, Athlone on Sunday March 15th. There was a strong turnout with exciting competition and friendly camaraderie amongst the competitors with athletes competing in the 35+ to 90+ categories in the battle for the GloHealth National Titles.

AAI Review

We had four athletes who represented our club at these national events. Following his podium positions at the British Masters Indoors last weekend, Jim O'Shea was back in action when he competed in the O70 cat. Long Jump, High Jump & 60m Sprint. Jim picked up bronze in the 60m Sprint (9.53), Gold in the High Jump & Long Jump

Mike O'Connor competed in the O65 3Km Race Walk. Michael produced a great performance to finish in 2nd place in a time of 17:48.40 earning a national silver medal.

Maria McCarthy was our only female in action. First up for Maria was the 3000m distance. Again like most races of the day it was very competitive, but Maria ran a fantastic race to win the race overall just ahead of Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers AC) and in doing so took gold in the O40 category. She ran it in a time of 10:22.54 which is a new national record. Two hours later, Maria was back in action in the 1500m distance. Running on tired legs, she held on to take 3rd place (4:55.74).

Well done to our four athletes who won a combined total of 7 national medals.
