FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY AC - STEPHENS DAY RACE 2013

Farranfore Maine Valley A.C.
5KM Road Race / Fun Run

Fr. Dan Browne Memorial Cup

Thursday 26th December 2012 @ 12 noon

One of the oldest road races in Ireland takes place every St. Stephens day. It has been run since 1961 along the same route.
Now in its 52nd year, is run from Farranfore to Firies and back to the finish in Farranfore.

NOTE TO RACE DISTANCE CHANGE..
It was recognised in last years road race that their was an increase in the amount of vehicles trying to use the road while the race was in progress. This proved a high risk to the safety of our competitors. Following a number of meetings by the race organisers it has been decided that the road needs to be closed off from traffic during the race. In order to facilitate this and still provide alternative diversion routes for road users we will need to shorten the distance of our race from the tradiutional 4.16miles (6.7KM) to 3.1miles (5KM).
By doing this we will keep the traditional route of starting at the mill in Farranfore, running to th cross-roads in Firies and returning via the same route. So it will be in keeping with the traditional OUT AND BACK course. We hope this does not cause any upset, but we must take the safety of our competitors very seriously. Now you can enjoy the day without having to worry about any traffic concerns.

Last years race proved to be a great success, especially with the fun runners where their was a large increase. It proved to be a fun day out for the whole family. This year we hope to make the event even better!!

The Course.... 5KM DISTANCE
It starts just at the entrance to the Kerry Group Mill on the Farranfore to Firies road. This is just 400 meters from the registration point and parking area at the Community Hall. The first 400 meters is up hill, once at the top it is down hill and then levels off for at least 1.6KM. Up hill as you approach Firies village, you will then turn on the road where it will be clearly marked. From here on you are returning on the same road you started from.
The road will be closed off to all traffic for the duration of the race.
Their will be plenty of stewards along the route with water stations also available.
