Club Notes Week Ending 23rd Feb. 2020

Munster Juvenile Indoors,

The Munster Juvenile U12-U19 Indoor Championships were held in the Nenagh Indoor stadium over two days. Isaac Vickers, Kevin O'Shea, Rhian & Eabha McCarthy made the trip to compete for our club over various events.  Participation from all Munster clubs was very high so plenty of competitive events.

Isaac Vickers (U12) tried his hand on all events. He got a pb of 9.17 in the 60m and was 4th in the 600m with a pb time of 1:52. Rhian McCarthy (U13) competed in the 600m where she finished in a time of 2:00

Eabha McCarthy (U15) competed in the 800m where she finished in a time of 2:46

County 5K Roads Championship

The County Road 5K Championship was held on Sunday 23rd Feb. in Beaufort. Hosted by Star Of The Laune AC. Weather conditions were ideal for the 56 runners. We had a good turnout from our club. In the Men's, George McCarthy was 7th (16:59) overall and 2nd in his O45 age category. Dermot Dineen was 10th (17:24) and 3rd O40. Brendan Lynch was 17th (18:42) and 3rd O45. Mike O'Connor won his O70 category in a time of 23:50. They were 4th Senior Team and 2nd O35 Master Team.

 In the Women's 5K, Maria McCarthy was back competing again after a long spell out due to injury. Maria ran well to finish 2nd senior (19:49). Helen English equally ran well to take 3rd Senior (21:28). Marie O'Shea won her O35 category (23:45), Mags Moriarty was second in her O60 category (25:35) and Pierette Scroope was third in her O45 category (24:44). Also well done to Samuel & Sally Scroope who guested the race and ran very well.

Leinster Master Indoors

Jerome Foley competed in the Leinster Master Indoor Championships held on Sat. 22nd Feb. Jerome who is training hard in preparation for the European Masters in March had a great day out. Winning the 200m (27.25) & 800m (2:22.29) and 2nd in the 400m (1:01.26). He also improved on his times from last week in the Munster Indoors. Next up for Jerome now in the National Masters on March 8th. Best of luck.

Other News
Well done to Arthur Fitzgerald who competed in the Barcelona Half Marathon on Sunday 16th Feb. Arthur was part of the Joe O'Connor Nicsus Fitness group to travel to this annual event. Arthur ran very well to finish in a personal best time of 1hr. 17mins. Well done.

Club Notes Week Ending 16th Feb. 2020

IUAA National Indoors,

The Irish University Indoor Championships were held on Saturday 15th Feb. in the AIT Arena Athlone.

David Kenny, representing CIT, competed in the 2000m Race Walk. David has dominated this event since he started college and this year was no exception. He not only won the race comfortably, but he also completed it in a new IUAA record time of 7:29.99. This sets David up nicely for the outdoor season. We wish him all the best.

Munster Indoor Track&Field,

Nenagh Indoor Area was the venue for the Munster U9-U11 Juveniles,  Senior & Masters Indoors. On Saturday 15th Ryan Vickers competed in the U11 events, which were 60m sprint, 600m and long jump. Ryan did not medal, but he really enjoyed the day out.

 

On Sunday was the Senior & Masters day out.

Daniel Clifford was back in action after a few years absent for athletics. He dusted off the cobwebs in fine fashion when he took gold in the Senior Men's Shot Putt with a throw of 11.80m.

His clubmate, James Nagle took silver with a throw of 11.35m. James also competed in the Weight For Distance(WFD) where his throw of 6.06m was enough to secure gold. Well done to both of you.

The Master's men equally did very well. Jim O'Shea (O75) took gold in the Long Jump (3.79m) and was second in the 60m sprint.

Jerome Foley (O55) has a busy day, where he competed in three distances. He won bronze in the 200m, and silver in both the 400m & 800m. Great start in his preparations for the European Indoors in March.

Dermot Dineen (O40) had a great day, securing Gold in the 3000m and 1500m. Well done to everyone.

Club Notes Week Ending 9th Feb. 2020

National Masters Cross Counrty,

Storm Ciara did not deter athletes as there was a large turnout for the final Cross country Race of the season. The National Masters, Intermediate & Juvenile 'B' XC was held in picturesque Avondale Estate, Co. Wicklow on Sat. 8th Feb.. The setting was lovely, however, the course was very testing for all athletes. A series of strong climbing and fast down hills under a very uneven footing was in store for the competitors. Helen English represented our club in the Masters Women 4km race. Helen, competing for the first time at National level for our club, was amongst 206 finishers over the 2 lap course. Helen did very well to finish 107th overall and 26th in her age category.

George McCarthy competed in the Masters men 7Km race. Again numbers were well up with 260 competing. George did very well to finish 52nd overall and 11th in his age category. Well done to both for taking the long journey to Wicklow.

Congratulations also to Conor O'Mahony (An Riocht AC) who won the Men's Intermediate Title. A great day for Kerry athletics.

County AGM Notes

The County AGM was held on 3rd Feb. Here are some County fixture dates that have been fixed.

• County 5K Road Race Championship (Novice / Junior / Senior / Master): Beaufort Sunday 23rd February at 12 noon.
• County Juvenile 'B' Indoor Games (U9-U12): Miltown Community Centre Sunday 8th March.
• County Awards Night: 17th or 18th April in Manor Hotel, Tralee.
• A Meeting at Knockreer, Killarney to discuss proposed changes to the current cross country course on Tuesday 18th February at 5.00pm.
• Next county board meeting on 23rd March at Killarney Court Hotel at 8.00pm.

Online entry for the Munster competitions on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th February are now open. Please note that Walks for all age groups including Senior & Masters are on Saturday 15th along with all 3km races for Junior, U/23, Senior & Masters. Closing date for both competitions is Tuesday 11th February at midnight

Munster Provincial Schools Cross Country

On Thursday 30th Jan. was the Munster Provincial Schools Cross Country Championships. Held in Tramore Valley Park, Cork was the South Munster competition. The first 15 from each race and first 3 teams qualify to go forward to the Munster XC on Thurs. 15th Feb.

Eabha McCarthy(KCC)  competed in the Junior Girsl 2K race where she finished in 22nd place.

Shauna McCarthy (KCC) was up next competing in the Intermediate Girls 3K race where she ran very well to finish in 4th place overall, securing a place in the Munster XC on Feb.13th in ClareCastle.

Cian Spillane (Milltown Pres.) raced in the Intermediate Boys 4K where he was up against some very stiff competition. Cian battled on the finish in 17th place. Well done to you all.

Junior  National Indoor Championships
Siofra Foley represented FFMV AC in the Junior Weight for Distance 28lb at the Junior and Under 23's National Indoor Championships in AIT, Athlone on Saturday 25th January. There was a large number of competitors in the Junior category who were throwing very well on the day. Siofra is 17 so will be in the same age group again next year. She did not medal on this occasion but enjoyed the experience.

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile held on Sunday 2nd Feb. where the event sold over 3,200 entries. This race attracts the best distance runners in Ireland. Well done to Arthur Fitzgerald who completed the distance in just over 60min, while Grainne Tierney completed it in 1hr 26mins. Well done to you both.
