Club Notes Week Ending 23rd June. 2019


Kerry Community Games
The Annual Kerry Community Games Athletics was held over two days at An Riocht Track, Castleisland. With 42 townland areas represented it is the largest juvenile athletics event in the county. Many of our club juveniles were competing across various events as they represented their areas in fine style. The competition was at a very high standard and all our athletes did very well, with almost all reaching their finals. 
We had seven athletes who were Gold medal winners and now go forward to represent Kerry in the National Finals next August. These were: 
Shauna McCarthy U16 1500m;
Eabha McCarthy U14 80m Hurdles; 
Ellen Kelliher U14 100m; 
Doireann O'Shea U14 Javelin; 
 Mairead Walsh U12 600m and 
 Liath Lenihan U16 High Jump.

Other podium positions were: 
Kevin O'Shea U10 60m Hurdles 3rd; 
 Isaac Vicker U12 600m 2nd; 
 Diarmuid Kirwan U14 Javelin 2nd; 
Ellen Kelliher U14 Long Jump 3rd; 
Patrick Kearney U16 Discus 2nd; 
Aine O'Shea U16 Discus 2nd and 
Niamh O'Shea U12 Ball Throw 4th;
Orna O'Leary  U14 Shot 2nd.

Well done to everyone who competed and did so well over the two days.


Shauna McCarthy (Killorglin CC) was also busy on Saturday 22nd June as she represented Munster in the School Tailteann Games held in Morton Stadium, Santry. Shauna competed in the 3000m where the standards were very high. She was not in the medals but enjoyed the experience and hopes to be back again next year.

Closing date for registration to the Munster Juvenile "B" T&F C'ships & Juv. Pentathlons, Lees Road Ennis is Thursday 27th June. Please have entries submitted to club secretary, Mary well before this date.

Club Notes Week Ending 16th June. 2019

Munster Juvenile T&F C'Ships
Munster U12 to U19 Juvenile T & F Championships Day 2 & 3 was held in An Riocht Track, Castleisland over the week-end. 
Back in action was Eabha McCarthy who competed in the U14 80m and 200m sprints. Eabha just missed out in reaching the 80m Final by 0.03sec. She was second in here 200m heat which qualified her for the finals. In what was a very competitive final she did very well to finish in 4th place with a time of 28.70sec. 
Ellen Kelliher also competed in the U15 80m & 200m sprints. Missing out in the finals of the 80m, she was second in the 200m heats to make the finals where she ran very well but missed out in medal spot. 
Shauna McCarthy took on the U16 3000m distance race where she ran very well to finish in 3rd place with a time of 10:56.28. Shauna also competed in the 1500m the following day. She did her best, running on tired legs to be placed 6th overall in a time of 5:27. 
Patrick Kearney was in action on the U16 Field events securing second place with a throw of 24.67m in the Hammer. He also competed in the Shot (8.77m) and Javelin (27.75m). 
Siofra Foley was in action for the U18 Discus where she threw a distance of 21.80m securing third place. She also competed in the Hammer (18.75m) and Javelin (18.75m) . 
Rossa Foley did the U23 Triple Jump where he finished in second Place. 
Aine O'Shea, just off the plane, competed in the U16 shot where she was 5th overall with a throw of 8.88m. 
Well done to everyone and thanks to all who volunteered on the day.

There was a big turnout for the Kerry Primary Schools Sports on Wednesday Evening 12th June in Castleisland. Well done to everyone from the Clubs District. They all did very well and it was great to see such a large turnout for this event. Results will be posted in Kerry Athletics website shortly.

As we near an end to our scheduled training for the summer season we wish to thank our chairman Jerome Crowley for arranging everything week in week out. To our coaches, Maria McCarthy, Sean O'Shea, Peter Vickers, Brendan Lynch, John Coleman and Dermot Dineen for all their support over the last few months.


Club Training:
Scheduled club training is finishing up for the summer period. Last Juvenile training is Tuesday 18th June at 6pm Farranfore GAA Grounds.
Some members will be coming together over the summer for group training. This can be managed through text or Whats app messages.

Club Notes Week Ending 9th June 2019

Munster Juvenile T&F C'Ships
Munster U12 to U19 Juvenile T & F Championships Day 1was held on Saturday 8th June in Templemore. We had five athletes competing over a range of events.
In the morning Eabha McCarthy competed in the U14 75m Hurdles. She qualified second in her heat to make the finals which was held immediately afterwards. Eabha hurdled well to finish in third place in a time of 12.16sec. 
Her sister Rhian McCarthy competed in the U12 600m, where she was placed 6th in her heat but was not good enough to make the finals. She enjoyed the experience competing at Munster level. 
Shauna McCarthy dropped down in her distance to take on the U16 800m. She did well to finish in 6th place in a time of 2:38.
Mairead Walsh took part in the U13 600m, where she did enough in the heats to qualify for the finals. Here she ran well to be placed 7th (1:51) overall in what was a very competitive race. 
Patrick Kearney was our only field athlete as he competed in the U16 Discus. He finished in 4th place with a throw of 33.54m.


Munster Junior / Snr & Masters T&F C'Ships.
On Sunday 9th we had the Munster Junior / Senior & Masters Track & Field Championships also held in Templemore Athletic Track. 
In the Masters we had Maria McCarthy (O40) who was third in the 800m & 1500m. 
Jim O'Shea (O75) was first in the 100m Sprint, High Jump & Long Jump. 
Rossa Foley did very well in the U23 category where he was first in the Javelin & WFD. he also secured second in the shot and Senior Javelin. 
In the Juniors Siofra Foley was second in the Shot, third in Discus and Hammer.

Club Training:
  • Tuesdays @ Farranfore GAA Grounds, €2, Juveniles U9 to U16 Outdoors 6 to 7pm (All events).
  • Thursday @ An Riocht Track, Castleisland, €3 Club Member €5 other. Juveniles U11-U16 & Senior 7:45 to 9:15pm (All events). NOTE: Must be Athletic Ireland Registered to attend. 
  • NOTE: Organised Training will end on last week in June for the summer break

Club Notes Week Ending 3rd June 2019

National Schools T&F C'Ships
A highly well organised Irish Life health All Ireland school track and field championships were held Saturday 1st June at the Tullamore Stadium in Co. Offaly. The 122 event program produced a host of stunning performances There was a good number of Athletes from local schools in Kerry. 
Cian Spillane (Pres. Milltown) competed in the Junior Boys 1500m. This turned out to be a very competitive race with a fast pace set from the gun. The winner had a finish time of 4:19. Cian held on to the leading group for two laps, but the pace was just too much, finishing in 10th with a time of 4:46.

Aine O'Shea (Mercy Mount Hawk) competed in the Junior Girls Discus. Again a highly competitive event with ten throwing. Aine had a best throw of 27.82m, just outside the medals finishing in fourth place. 
Well done to the both of you for representing your schools at such a high level..

Munster U12 to U19 Juvenile T & F Championships Day 1 is on Saturday 8th June in Templemore with Day 2&3 in Castleisland the following week. Contact Club secretary to register.
