5K Road Run - December 26th 2018

Farranfore Maine Valley A.C.
5KM  Run

Wednesday 26th December 2018
@ 12 noon

One of the oldest road races in Ireland takes place every St. Stephen's day. It has been run since 1961 along the same route.
Now in its 57th year, is run from Farranfore to Firies and back to the finish in Farranfore.

In 2013 the distance was changed from the traditional 4.16miles (6.7KM) to 3.1miles (5KM). This was to make the route safer for all runners and spectators by closing the road to traffic. It proved to be a great success so we have decided to keep with this for all future races.

We will keep the traditional route of starting at the Kerry Mill in Farranfore, running close to the cross-roads in Firies and returning via the same route. So it will be in keeping with the traditional OUT AND BACK course. You can enjoy the day without having to worry about any traffic concerns.

National Novice & Juvenile XC
The final cross country race of the year was the National Novice and Juvenile uneven ages. Held in Navan on what was a very windy and damp day. Considering the amount of rain we got over the last few weeks, the ground conditions were quiet good. It was a challenging course with plenty of hair pen bends and undulating hills into the wind.
Shauna McCarthy was competing in the U15 3500m race. The start was into a uphill climb where Shauna got off to a good start positioned in the center of the field of over 100 runners. At just the 700m mark there was a fall by another athlete which resulted in Shauna loosing one of her spikes. Not deterred she picked herself up and fought hard over the course of the race to move up the field. She showed her strength on the hills and coming into the final 500m's she was now in the top 20 group. Shauna gave it everything to right to the finish where she was placed 11th overall, earning her first individual National A medal. She was also part of the Munster team to get silver. A great race and one she will always remember.
The final race of the day was the Novice Men's 6000m where we had George McCarthy & Arthur Fitzgerald part of the county team. The course was by now muddy and the wind had picked up. The start was wild with 254 athletes racing to find a good position before the course closed in. Arthur had a great race where he battled through the field over the three laps. he finished in 82nd place and third scorer for the county. A great achievement and a difficult course. George equally did well to be placed 136th and the sixth scorer. The county team was placed 9th overall.

The Annual Newmarket 5K was held on Sunday 16th December. This is always a fast and popular event. Well done to Mary Daly completing the distance in 18:29 and Caitriona Barry in a time of 19:37.

There was great support for our bag packing fundraiser in DUNNES Killarney last week-end. A special thanks to all our volunteers who gave up their time to support. Thanks also to DUNNES Killarney, a major sponsor to our club.

Club Notes Week Ending 9th Dec. 2018

National Race Walking Championships
Farranfore Maine Valley athlete David Kenny made his National Senior Race-walking debut a silver one. Competing in the National 20km Outdoor Race Walking Championships event in Raheny on Saturday 8th December he posted an excellent time of 1hr 29mins in blustery/showery conditions. From the start he mixed with no less an athlete than a Guatemalan, competing as a guest, who was a silver medalist in the 20k London Olympics. David's performance has placed him third in the all time list for an U20 athlete. The Ballyhar man was delighted with his performance and is now up there with top names in Irish Race-walking. Ray Flynn, Athletics Ireland Director of Race-walking was fulsome in his praise of David's performance.
Not forgetting his club mate and mentor, Michael O'Connor, who competed in the Masters 5K race walk. Mike equally had a great performance finishing in third place for the O65 category posting a time of 30.16. A historical day for our race walkers.

Closer to home, An Riocht AC hosted their Annual 5K road race in Castleisland on Sunday 9th Dec.
Well done to Arthur Fitzgerald who was placed fourth overall (16:49).
