WORLD MASTERS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015

Maria McCarthy may have come late to the sport of athletics, but she is certainly making her mark! Over the last two weeks she represented Ireland in the 2015 World Masters Athletics championships at Lyon in France and earned herself an individual silver medal in the Irish colours. On August 7th, competing in the W40 5000m track event the Farranfore Maine Valley AC lady and another Irish athlete, Cathy McCourt, amongst the front group. Not long into the race the field began to spread out as the searing heat took its toll. All athletes were finding the heat difficult with the pace a lot slower than normal. With 3 laps to go, Maria was in 2nd place just behind a Finland athlete and looking very comfortable. Cathy McCourt 100m behind in 3rd place. Maria made an attack for first place but the Finland athlete had enough to keep in the lead. And so it finished with Maria crossing the line in 2nd place (18:55.63) just 12 seconds adrift of winner Paula Tukiainen from Finland (18:43.47), but well clear of 3rd placed Cathy McCourt also representing Ireland (19:35.59). This was a major achievement considering athletes had to contend with temperatures exceeding 38oC. Maria was understandably “absolutely thrilled” after this fine achievement.

Maria also contested the 1500m track race and placed 2nd in her heat in a time of 4:54.36. This was the third fastest time over the three heats of 29 runners in total. In the final Maria which took place two days later was placed 5th with a time of 4:51.22.
Maria commented after the race: “the pace of the last 800m was really fast, my legs were just too tired to keep with the leaders. I was delighted with making the final and placed in top 5…” Maria was just 1 second shy of her seasons best time, which given the hot and humid conditions indicates that she ran to her maximum potential on the day.
Maria who is self-coached felt like she was running right for the first time in her life, doing the right training. She changed from previously competing in the longer distances such as marathons & half marathons to the shorter distances of 1500m to 5000m. Then it was just a question of executing it all in the Worlds. She certainly enjoyed the build-up, training with athletes such as Shona Heaslip, Caitriona Barry & Niamh O’Sullivan. Niamh who also competed in the Worlds and won an individual silver in W50 5000m and team silver in the cross country.
Maria, originally from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and now living with her husband and 4 young children in Milltown, joined Farranfore Maine Valley AC in 2011 with no previous athletics exposure. Since then she has become a popular figure in the sport of athletics within the county and at national level. She has won most major senior championship titles in Kerry & Munster even as a master athlete. At National level she was part of numerous county teams who won national cross country titles and holds many individual medals from the National Masters Track & cross country.
During her time with Farranfore Maine Valley she has continuously educated herself and is now a qualified personal coach from NTC and holds a level 2 athletics coaching cert specialising in endurance. Maria is one of our main coaches within the club for juveniles and senior athletes. Everyone in the club and athletics in Kerry are so proud of her achievements…we just wish she started in the sport 20 years earlier..

World Masters Track & Field Championships, Lyon 2015

Maria McCarthy Silver Medal in World Masters
W40 5000m Track
The World Masters Track & Field Championships in Lyon, France is underway with a magnificent tally of 70 Athletes registered to compete for Ireland, which is a record entry for a European or World Masters Champs. There are a significant number of Athletes competing for the first time also. Amongst those is our very own Maria McCarthy.

On Friday 7th August Maria prepared herself for her very first World Championship event when she was representing Ireland in the W40 5000m distance. With temperatures reaching 38oC and the high humidity added to the challenge. Due to the high entry numbers for this event they were two 5000m finals with the winners decided on time. The races were seeded so Maria was placed with the fastest athletes on the second race. A number of these competed in the Olympics not that long ago.
Maybe there was a bit of irish luck, but just 10mins before race start a dark thunder cloud covered over the intense heat from the sun which was a welcome comfort for the Irish athletes. The eleven strong runners started off, Maria and another irish athlete, Cathy McCourt, amongst the front group. And so it finished with Maria taking 2nd place in the race.
This race was the fastest of the two finals, so it was official that Maria McCarthy had won her very first Individual Worlds silver medal. This has been a roller coaster of a year for Maria and we are all so very proud of her.
She is a dedicated athlete and an excellent coach.

  3 5216 Mc Court, Cathy W42 Ireland 19:35,59 2

Maria will have a few days rest before she competes in the 1500m heats on Wednesday 12th with the finals on Friday 14th. We wish her all the best.

Congratulations also to Niamh O'Sullivan (An Riocht) who competed in the 8000m cross country, she finished in 4th place, but was part of the Irish team to win silver. Niamh also competed in the O50 5000m track and ran a great race to win Bronze. Well done.

Athletics Ireland Statement on Published Doping Allegations

POSTED: August 03 2015

Athletics Ireland Statement on Doping Allegations Published on 1 and 2 August 2015
Athletics Ireland are deeply concerned about the allegations of suspected widespread doping in elite athletics over many years made in a documentary broadcast on the German ARD/WRD network and published by the Sunday Times this weekend but welcome it as an opportunity for athletics to continue its battle against doping.

Athletics Ireland CEO John Foley said:

"Athletics Ireland believes in a zero tolerance policy for doping and we are fully committed alongside the Irish Sports Council (ISC) to enforce the the rules. Athletics Ireland shares the concerns expressed by the President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and we call on the IAAF, as the world governing body for the sport, to clarify the situation as soon as possible.

"Our record for tackling doping stands for itself down through the years. Ireland are at the forefront of testing athletes and we stand confidently over the drug testing programme administered by the ISC which sees athletics as the most tested sport in Ireland. We have a fantastic sport which is growing annually in Ireland and we want to ensure that all the stakeholders in our sport are committed to a clean environment for our athletes."

National League Final 2015

On Sunday 2nd August the National League Final was held in Tullamore where the Kerry Athletics Women’s team was in action. The whole team did exceptionally well  over all there events and they finished in a very impressive third place overall (89 points) in Division 1. Considering they were unsuccessful in qualifying to the finals in 2014 this year has been a major success for athletics in Kerry. Every club in the county came together and they should all be proud of there athletes.

Emma Prendiville & Maria McCarthy played a very important role in securing valuable points for the Kerry team. Emma won the race walk  (7:06.1) and Maria won her 1500m race (4:52.28). Well done to you both and to the rest of the Kerry panel, their coaches and organisers.

An Riocht AC also competed in Division 1, they finished in 4th place. Michael O'Connor guested for An Riocht and competed in the race walk.
